ALBANY TRIP
11th February 1938
Boy Scout Group 51

Twenty nine Boy Scouts of the Gnowangerup Group under the supervision of the Scout master, Mr C. Hutchings  assisted by Mr Hugh Clarke, journeyed to Albany and Emu Point, where an enjoyable holiday camp was spent.  Despite the very wet weather, the boys were very happy and were brought home 14 days later, all looking a picture of health. Mr Edgar Davis of Albany very kindly lent his residence at Emu Point free of charge and many thanks are due to him for this kindness, both for his house and for the use of his car to transport the boys to Emu Point and his continued attention to the boys during the whole time of our camp.

The Scouts spent a day out in Albany and had the pleasure of being escorted through the whole of the Albany Woollen Mills and judged by the interest taken, all departments were thoroughly enjoyed. A half day's outing was also spent on the water and but for a little seasickness, this excursion proved both novel and enjoyable.  To route marches of about 10 miles each were conducted. The conduct of the boys during the whole period was splendid and their keenness to carry out their good turns was appreciated by both visitors and residents alike, and has resulted in making many friends as well as leaving behind a reputation of character and cheerfulness for the youth of Gnowangerup and district.

A word of praise is due to our new patrol, which was drawn from Pallinup under the able leadership of Robert Cockram.  As they are all new recruits, the Scoutmaster is looking forward to their continued interest.  They received visits from the parents of some of the boys in the persons of Mr A. J. White, Mr C. E. Cockram, Mrs G. Crisp, and Mrs White.  Other visitors or were Mr Dyson, Mr C. Moir, Mr Scott of Katanning and Messrs. Marshall,  G.S.M. of the Albany group,  Edgar Davis and Troop Leader Wignall.  Leonard Davis, P.L., Keith Davis and Mr R. Smith who have just returned from the Sydney Jamboree, also paid a visit to the camp. Campfire nights were conducted each evening and each boy did his bit in making the time enjoyable.  In conclusion, I wish to thank all those people who helped to make the trip the success it was.  C.E..Hutchins G..S.M.

GNOWANGERUP/TAMBELLUP/BORDEN.
ANNUAL DISPLAY 1938
TROOP NO. 10. 29/10/38
The Gnowangerup Scout & Guides Troops; Wolf Cubs and Brownies, along with the the the Borden Sea Scouts, Guides and Brownies hosted the Tambellup Sea Scouts in the Gnowangerup Memorial Hall. The Gnowangerup Ambulance Association was also in attendance.
"The first Annual Display took place in the Memorial Hall on October 15th, and seating accomodation was filled to its capacity and every minute of the programme was thoroughly enjoyed by both audience and performers alike. The display opened with a Camp fire scene in which Gnowangerup Group 51 and Borden and Tambellup Sea Scouts took part, providing 30 minutes song and laughter and gave a real touch of an open air gathering.
The Borden Boys led by Skipper C. D. Stone, rendered a very excellent entertainment both with their Harmonica Band and vocal items. All scouts were of one happy family.
The Brownies, a unit of the Borden Girl Guides Company No.1 under district Commissioner, Mrs. Wickham then staged a camp fire scene which was of an excellent character.
Gnowangerup. Ambulance party then followed with a very real and able display of First Aid work led by Patrol Leader Leonard Fennell, with the assistance of and Patrol Leaders A. Stewart: Ted Crisp, and D. Hendry, with 2nd PL. Bruce Stewart as patient. The display was a credit to the Boys and also their instructor, as the display was carried out with great accuracy and detail.
No.1 Company of Girl Guides gave a very interesting sketch, depicting the aims of their Association in helping those in distress and carrying out to the letter the laws of the movement.
A display of morse signalling was given with Stewart Hope at the tapper and buzzer and P.L Bruce Stewart with flag and Ted Crisp as receiver. This team proved themselves both fast and accurate.
The Wolf Cub pack then gave a display of Jungle Dances led by Sixer H Davies, which prove to be very interesting to the audience. particularly the final scene, The death of Shear Khan."
This was followed by a play entitled “The Helping Hand’, by R. Crisp, E. Crisp Fennell and D. Hendry.
Borden Sea Scouts then rendered several action-Sea Shanties and the success of this turn reflected very favourably on their coach, Mr. C. D. Stone, an old sea dog himself.
A display of bandaging by the Wolf Cubs was received well by the audience.
Cub Alwyn Wright took the. crowd by storm with his rendition of “My Mabel Waits for Me."
Bag-pipe solos were rendered by Sea Scout J. Trappitt and met with warm approval.
Mr. N. P. Davis, chairman of the Gnowangerup Group Committee in delivering his address spoke favourably of the good work being carried out in the training of the boys.
Mr. Davis went on to urge all public organisations to assist the scoutmaster in going on with his good work.
Mr. F. J. Grockck, Road Board Chairman, supported Mr. Davis and drew attention to the many unsuccessfull attempts to establish the Boy Scout Group in the past.
Now that a scout-master of the calibre of Mr. Hutchins has come along and placed the group on a sound footing, there is no reason why it should not last as a monument to his name, to his unselfish care of the boys has earned fa bim thẻ whole hearted friendship of both parents and children alike.
The Scoutmaster then thanked all for their support and attention and conveyed to Scout master Lawrence and his troop from Tambellup, the best wishes and a hearty welcome.
All visiting souls were then entertained by the Gnowangerup boys at supper, prepared by the local parents"

GNOWANGERUP BROWNIES

WOW. A blast from the past! This was the last act of campfire singing when Gnowangerup Brownies put on a concert. They were very lucky in having help and talents of the Girl Guides, Marina and Terri and the two other Guides that are hiding in the image., also the support of the Cubs and their leaders. The group had convinced the Tambellup Brownies and their leaders to come acroos and do an act. Flashez Gym Club and Bronia Stewart did an awesome display. The group was very lucky with great support from the local towns people. An amazing night with very little standing room left - an absolute success with all joining for a deserved supper in the Lesser Hall. Yep, nerves had gone and appetites returned by then. An amazing night with an amazing bunch and so much laughter.
